The name Mississippi Mudslide makes me think of two things: chocolate cake dripping with chocolate syrup sliding off the plate and into my mouth (entirely by accident, yup…) or some super-sugary alcoholic beverages that have 10,000 calories each and happened to have accidentally made their way into my stomach—after the cake, mind you! This shake is neither of those—you don’t have to experience a major ‘snaccident’ nor truckloads of carb-laden guilt to enjoy this mouthwatering chocolaty protein shake. In fact, it is quite the opposite of alcoholic—it’s caffeinated! At only 165 calories, it also fits neatly into most meal plans.
I’ve studded it with cacao nibs for an extra crunchy mood-boosting wow factor. Cacao nibs, the flavored coffee, and the anise extract on the ingredients list can all be found in the supermarket, a health food store, or online. Cacao nibs are not as sweet as chocolate bars or chips, yet they are still pleasantly sweet enough. Surprisingly, they contain more antioxidants than tea, wine, or even blueberries! Cacao nibs are the closest thing to eating pure cacao beans you can get. You get the most benefits from the least processed form rather than chocolate bars which have more fats and added sugars. Consuming cacao nibs helps improve focus and alertness, maintain muscle & nerve function due to their magnesium content, and boost the mood. This protein shake is a cure for that worn down, 2:30 in the afternoon feeling of EPIC proportions!
Ingredients:
- 2 scoops (1 serving) chocolate EFX Sports Protein 6
- 1 tbsp. Irish cream or Irish whiskey flavored coffee
- 1 tbsp. White Russian flavored coffee (you can also use flavoring drops of these & use regular coffee)
- 10-12 ounces of water
- Ice cubes (as desired)
- 1 tbsp. cacao nibs
- ¼ tsp. anise extract (optional)
- 1 tbsp. sugar free chocolate syrup
- 1 packet of stevia sweetener
Directions:
You will be brewing the coffee for this beforehand. Brew the two tablespoons of coffee in your coffee machine with the amount of water you would use for one large cup of coffee, 10-12 ounces. Stick it in the fridge if you will be waiting a long time to make the shake, or put it in the freezer for ½ hour. Once the coffee is cold enough, put everything in the blender except for the syrup and the cacao nibs and blend. Pour the shake in a glass and squirt the syrup throughout the glass (like I did) or add it to the top. Then, sprinkle the cacao nibs over it. Sharing is caring folks, and if you share this drink you will be remembered! Hint: your boss might like it…I smell a promotion!
