Ask The Trainer #111 – Gain Muscle While Losing Fat

QUESTION:

I want to lose weight more than gain weight and gain muscle in my arms, back, and stomach. I don’t what supplements to take?

Sarah

ANSWER:

Hi, Sarah. Many experts in the Fitness Industry claim it’s impossible to gain muscle while losing fat at the same time. This idea is absolutely false.

As you build more muscle, your basic metabolic rate will increase, which supports the reduction of body fat. So yes, BOTH of these objectives can be achieved at the same time.

There are a plethora of sports nutrition supplements on the market targeted at consumers who want to lose fat and build muscle. Today, it seems like everybody and their uncle has some new, “cutting-edge, miracle supplement” they’re trying to launch into the industry. Many of these products seem appealing and exotic at face value, but from a scientific perspective, they offer little-to-no value to the consumer. This is why I always recommend beginning with a base of supplements I know have been thoroughly researched and have also withstood the test of time to demonstrate their value and safety to the consumer.

That being said, the first supplements I’m going to suggest are branched chain amino acids, creatine, glutamine, and whey protein. Since I know EFX Sports is a reputable brand with exceptional quality, I’m going suggest a few of the most popular supplements on their roster I feel good recommending.

Supplement Suggestions

Training Ground BCAA:

Branched Chain amino acids activate a catalyst known in the biochemistry world as mTOR – a protein complex that works as a signaling mechanism to increase protein synthesis in the body. These means better recovery, which, in turn, leads to more productive muscle gains. BCAAs also support numerous other functions in the body the body like transporting oxygen, producing energy, and stabilizing blood sugar levels. Freeform BCAAs produce the greatest benefits when taken on an empty stomach before, during, and after workouts.

Kre-Alkalyn Hardcore:

This is popular, multipurpose creatine supplement. It contains Kre-Alkalyn, a stable, buffered creatine monohydrate that is compatible with the pH of the human body so that t assimilates most efficiently and helps to avoid common issues other creatine products on the market may cause. Creatine supports the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s primary energy chemical that is most significant to athletes or people looking to improve their physical performance.

Research demonstrates creatine can improve strength and anaerobic power output. Moreover, creatine serves an important role in boosting protein synthesis to enhance lean muscle gains, increasing cellular hydration levels, preventing the decline of ATP synthesis, and preventing mitochondrial damage to DNA caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, Kre-Alkalyn Hardcore is unique in the fact that in addition to Kre-Alkalyn, it also contains a blend of thermogenic herbs that will kick-start your motivational energy and give your metabolism a boost to support fat loss.

GlutaZorb:

Glutamine occupies the composition of skeletal muscles more than any other amino acid. Because of this, many recognize it as an essential supplement for anyone looking to build more muscle. The body requires glutamine for optimal protein synthesis (muscle building) to occur. Research has shown that glutamine also plays significant roles in supplying energy to the brain, fighting fatigue, improving exercise endurance, and supporting the synthesis of human growth hormone (HGH) which is important for people wanting to build more muscle and reduce body fat levels. Furthermore, rapidly dividing cells, especially cells of the gut and immune system, require glutamine. That’s why doctors commonly recommend glutamine for people with immune deficiencies or diseases that cause damage to the gastrointestinal tract.

Training Ground Pure Whey:

Whey protein digests more rapidly than other sources of protein. This trait makes it a great protein source for increasing protein synthesis in the body. Pure Whey protein shakes are an ideal bridge between your main meals when you’re feeling hungry or craving something sweet. Besides supporting muscle growth, quality whey protein such as TG Pure Whey also contributes to the synthesis of L-Glutathione, the master antioxidant in the body that works to detoxify the body and liver. Additionally, whey protein concentrate contains naturally occurring lactoferrin and immunoglobulins, which contribute to maintaining a healthy immune system.
